It would seem obvious that due to Covid there would be more bankruptcies in 2020 than the year before. The American Bankruptcy Institute claims there were 35% fewer.

Was it stimulus money or the moratorium on debt collections? In fact, families are spending less and saving more during the pandemic.

When you hear consumer bankruptcy, it is followed by a chapter number: 7 or 13. What is the difference? Chapter 7 is also known as liquidation. It is simpler to file and takes less time. It does wipe out most of your debt, but it requires you to sell most of what you own: your house, your investment...
