Candidate Profile: Taylor Dowling

Running for Alva City Council, Ward 2

March 21, 2021

I have been a proud Goldbug my entire life. After graduating from Alva High School, I enrolled at Northwestern Oklahoma State University where I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science.

I have always thought it is important to give back to my community and so I have become a member of Kiwanis, volunteered with local food banks and pantries, and worked on other community projects.

I got my first job outside my family when I was 16. I've worked for WD Guns, Dowling Construction, Little Sahara State Park, Farmers Co-op, VAP, Concho Land Co., BancCentral, and Community Bank where I am currently employed. I also have a wide range of skills like roofing, laying concrete, remodeling, land abstracts, web development, and full stack development.

In the field of computers and technology, I have worked as a virtual machine manager and network operations manager and held an Oklahoma Access Control CCTV and Firealarms License. I have done IT work at many banks, hospitals, doctors' and dentists' offices, retirement homes, government agencies, and school districts and have assisted several independent businesses and individuals. In fact, there is a good chance I have helped either you or the business where you work. My primary academic focus was full stack development. I know and have programmed in over half a dozen programming languages like PHP, JS, C++, C#, Cobol, SQL, just to name the popular ones.

I think the strongest selling point of Alva is its small-town charm, class, and all the wonderful people who call it home. It is full of exuberant and intellectually stimulating people and has many proud traditions and an even stronger community which is more like a family.

I think the city faces the same problems that its citizens have: financial struggles, entertainment and recreational activities, and for some like many in my home district, a struggle to maintain the necessities of modern life like electricity, water/sewage, outdated zoning, and municipal codes that are such that, for example, if your house burns down you won't be able to rebuild it the same size!

There are no shortcuts or easy answers. We need dedicated council members who can stand up for the people of Alva and not just their own personal interests. The people of Alva deserve a fair shake, not taxation without representation.

With my experience in computer science, construction, finance and vendor management, I believe I have the heart and background to make sure Alva will be a flourishing and prosperous town so that we all can share our own little piece of Alva with generations to come.
