Lee and the late Peggy Mackey, natives of Alva, were married in 1975. The Mackeys attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University for some time before Lee transferred to Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University. He graduated with a degree in animal husbandry. Peggy later returned to work at Northwestern.

The Mackeys farmed and ranched their entire lives in the Alva area. Two of their four children are Northwestern alumni. Lee is passionate about supporting Northwestern and sees the value it brings to northwest Oklahoma.
