The rowdy hometown crowd in Statesboro, Georgia, was pleased when, on the night of July 19, 1952, batboy Joe Reliford pinch hit for the visiting Fitzgerald Pioneers in a game the visitors were losing by the score of 13-0.

The spectators were even happier when the 12-year-old youngster hit a hard grounder to third base that came within one step of being an infield single. They cheered wildly for what they considered a successful at-bat.
