Let's read the Bible

Week 19

This week we go back to the Old Testament and read the book of Joshua. Joshua became the leader of Israel after the death of Moses. Finally, the journey is nearing the end. The Israelites left Egypt by crossing the Red Sea on dry land and they enter the promised land on dry land crossing the River Jordan. Once again Joshua reminds them of the Law, and that God is with them as long as they are obedient.

There is much to be done. There are 31 kings to conquer. There is land to divide among the tribes of Israel. The tribe of Levi, the priesthood, did not receive land with a specific boundary like the rest did. They received certain cities and grazing lands within each of the other tribal lands. Each tribe would need priests within their communities to make sacrifices and atonements for the people.

Joshua tells the story of the fall of Jericho and Rahab who saved the spies. This is the same Rahab mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in the book of Matthew. God is faithful. He takes care of those who act faithfully toward Him. When Joshua is given leadership of Israel, God tells him numerous times to be strong and courageous. He accomplishes all that is required to settle God’s people in Canaan.

The Lord delivers the land of Canaan to Israel, just as He promised. Joshua reminds the people of the promises kept and the power displayed. “Choose this day whom you will serve, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Who shall we serve today?
