Covid cases at BJCC put Woods County at orange level

Woods County is one of only two counties in Oklahoma at the moderate risk (orange) level for Covid-19, according to the weekly update June 9 by the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). Craig County in the northeast corner of the state is the other orange level county. All others are either green (new normal) or yellow (low risk).

Two weeks ago, Woods County had two positive cases, and last week the county showed five with three cases at Bill Johnson Correctional Center (BJCC) in Alva.

The June 9 report lists Woods County with 12 positive cases of Covid, all in Alva. However, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections shows that BJCC positive cases have jumped to 17. Cases among inmates are counted in the location where they are incarcerated although staff would be counted in the counties where they reside. There are 147 people from BJCC shown as quarantined.

In other Woods County towns of Dacoma, Freedom and Waynoka, there are no positive cases listed.

Looking at surrounding counties, Alfalfa, Major and Harper counties have zero positive cases this week while Woodward County has one.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University updates their Covid cases on Fridays. On June 4, NWOSU was showing no cases among students or staff on any of their three campuses in Alva, Enid and Woodward.
