The fix was in, again

Mary Hamilton resigned from the Alva City Council, prompting the need for a replacement. I was sad to see her go, but she needs to do what's best for her and her family.

The obvious choice was the runner-up in the earlier race, Dalton Beeler. He wanted to serve enough to run for the office and garnered lots of votes and support in his bid. Instead, the mayor chose to thumb his nose at the people he represents and choose his own replacement.

I don't know Sadie Bier from Adam's off-ox. She may be a good council person, and I wish her luck and wisdom, but the reason she is there is lame. If she had a real interest in being on the council before the mayor asked, her name would have been on the ballot.

When questioned about why the Alva citizens’ second choice was not chosen, the mayor said he wanted diversity that Beeler wouldn't bring to the council. In my opinion, diversity from Kelly Parker is eliminating anyone who will not follow him blindly.

I watch too much television, but oh well. The commercials are as interesting and/or offensive as the shows but kind of entertaining in their own way. One thing that makes me wonder is "actor portrayal." Why not have actual users (some commercials do)?

The people that have used the products, primarily drugs, have spent the big bucks for them, so why not let them recoup some of their money with a testimonial. It worries me that the manufacturers may not have anyone that will lie about the product they have taken, or no one lived to talk about it.

This pastor decided to skip church one Sunday morning and play golf. He told his assistant he wasn't feeling well and then drove to a course in another city, so nobody would know him. He teed off the first hole. A huge gust of wind caught his ball, carried it an extra hundred yards and dropped it in the middle of the hole for a 450-yard hole in one. An angel looked at God and asked, "What would you do that for?" God smiled and said "Who's he going to tell?"

Let's be cool and safe out there. God bless one and all.

(Editor’s note: The city council appointment referred to in this opinion column occurred on July 7 in a special meeting. The appointment was approved unanimously by a vote of city council members. The story appeared in the July 11 Alva Review-Courier and a video of the meeting may be seen at
