Man cites squatter's rights for living in abandoned house


A man claimed squatter’s rights gave him permission to live in an abandoned house in Cherokee. On July 14 at 10:13 p.m. Cherokee Police Officer Tristan Hall was dispatched to 401 S. Pennsylvania regarding people in an abandoned house, according to court documents.

Upon arrival Hall made contact with Paul Powell whom he knew from previous encounters. According to the officer’s affidavit, Powell said he had been there the last four or five days. Hall asked who owned the house, and Powell said a bank out of California.
