Early recordings

Dear to my family, I have a 78 rpm record that my mother and Aunt Carrie made in the ‘40s. There were record-making machines available and they had one “cut.”

The first phonograph was invented in 1877 and used a cylindrical disk. It was called a gramophone. My grandparents (Chaffee) had one in their attic, which I enjoyed when visiting them in the ‘50s.

Records became very popular as the equipment to reproduce sound was improved. Some may remember the Columbia Record Club, which sent your choice of six selections with the agreement to buy one more per month for a year. I looked forward to the...
