September 15, 2021

Temperatures in the 60s greeted the runners and walkers in Kiowa's 36th Annual Labor Day 5K Race. Race co-chairman Melissa Rector said 255 registered for the race and 196 finished.

As reported in the Newsgram last week through pictures, the winning male was Luis Chavez with a time of 16 minutes and 11 seconds. Chavez, a former Alvan now from Edmond, won Kiowa's Labor Day 5K race for the fourth consecutive time in 2019. There was no race in 2020 due to Covid-19. This year, 2021, Chavez returned to Kiowa to again win the race, making this his fifth year to capture the title with a time of 16:11.

Micah McGee won the women's 5K with a time of 21:14. She is related to the Max McGee family of Kiowa who all wore matching green shirts. Micah is 13 years old and from Eldorado, Texas.

The second place male was Ryan Bickerstaff, who is originally from Alva. He won Kiowa's 5K in 2013 with a time three minutes faster than the second-place time. Bickerstaff returned to the Labor Day race this year to take second place with a time of 17:36. His time set a new record and made him the male Masters winner.

The third place male was Mylo Miller, South Barber School superintendent in Kiowa, who won the Labor Day race in 2010 and 2011. He was second in 2018 and was third this year with a time of 19:23.

The second fastest woman in the race was Kaylen Corder of Alva with a time of 22:50. Third place went to Heather Miller, wife of Mylo Miller who also placed third in the men. Her time was 23:17.
