Texas man charged with violating sex offender safety zone

October 3, 2021

A stop of five ATVs traveling on the shoulder of a highway resulted in the arrest of one driver. Woods County court records show on Saturday, Sept. 15, about 12:15 p.m. Oklahoma State Park Ranger Adam Honeyman was on duty at Little Sahara State Park. Honeyman saw five four-wheelers traveling southbound along the shoulder of US-281. State law prohibits the operation of ATVs on the highway, shoulder or bar ditches. Honeyman turned his vehicle around and conducted a traffic stop on the four-wheelers.

In checking licenses, Honeyman found Andrew Hamilton Gonzalez had two flags on his license, one for being a sex offender and the other that he was a martial arts expert. Honeyman had Woods County run a criminal history on Gonzalez and learned he had served two years in Texas on a 2011 sexual assault of a child case.

Oklahoma state law prevents offenders such as this from being in a state park. Honeyman spoke with Gonzalez who confirmed he was a sex offender and he was camping in the Cowboy Campgrounds site at Little Sahara.

Gonzalez was placed under arrest for violating the zone of safety law prohibiting sex offenders from being in places where children could be present including state parks. Gonzalez was transported to the Woods County Jail where he was released to the jailer.

On Sept. 29, Andrew Hamilton Gonzalez, 32, of Richmond, Texas, was charged with violating safety zones around elementary and junior high schools, child care facilities and playgrounds, a felony. This crime is punishable by a fine of $2,500 and up to one year in the county jail.
