What former presidents do, part 1

As a U.S. historian with an interest in politics, I have long studied the careers of American presidents. I have noticed, of course, how much their lives change when they become the person occupying the Oval Office in the White House.
Someone who becomes the president of the United States is arguably the most powerful person not only in the country but also in the world.
I have also taken note of the fact that when a president becomes a former president, that person is no longer powerful and is thrust rather quickly back into the general population.
