Burlington School Board approves FY22 budget, plans Veteran's Day program
Elks basketball season begins Thursday

Burlington Public School has reason for celebration as students succeed in many areas. Many of those were mentioned by principals at the October board of education meeting.
Terry Graham called the meeting to order with board members present: Robert Hill, April Kisling and Aaron Smith. T.J. Rockenbach was absent. Also attending were: Superintendent Kevin Brown, Jr/Sr High Principal Gerrett Spears, Elementary Principal Stan Pederson and Minutes Clerk Tracy Granados.
Spears invited the public to the school's Veterans Day program Thursday, Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
Burlington School's budget for FY22 was approved with expenditures totaling $5,010,715.21. Superintendent Brown said the mill levy stayed the same.
Brown explained to the board about SB 783, which regards the Open Transfer Policy FE. He told the Newsgram the policy basically allows students to openly transfer twice a year. The board discussed the policy regarding the potential wording of it which must be in place by January 1, 2022. The board deferred any decision to the November or December 2021 meetings.
Providing an update on the revised Covid-19 policy, Brown told the board this info is also posted on the school website. He said Covid info actually changes weekly and individuals are only quarantined if they test positive. The school has no mask mandate, but practices social distancing. “We're pretty much back to normal, but we still take precautions,” Brown said.
Other items the board approved: to keep employee prices for lunch the same for the remainder of the year; fundraisers; the 2022 Annual School Election Resolution and to remove precincts 020220 – no voters and 020140 – 1 voter.
The following encumbrances change orders and warrants received board approval as follows: General Fund Encumbrances 156-169 for $17,057.00, Change Orders for $28.10 and Warrants 275-387 for $252,71.87; Building Fund Warrant 7 for $554.26; and Child Nutrition Fund Encumbrance 13 for $500.00 and Warrants 26-39 for $12,266.69.
Free tutoring is now available for 7th-12th graders through Upward Bound once a week for two hours.
Superintendent Brown reported that no student drop outs were recorded in the 2020-2021 school year. He acknowledged receipt of the 2021-2022 OSSBA Membership Certification Letter. He reminded that the OSSBA Region 2 Meeting is October 26 in Seiling.
An Abundance of Student Achievements
Principal Spears reported that the BHS Robotics Team worked hard preparing for their first competition this year in Alva Saturday, Oct. 23. They finished first in BEST (Boosting Engineering Science Technology) and also won the Robotics category. The team competes in Denver Dec. 11 and 12 for the Denver BEST Regional Championship.
One Act performed for the community and at regionals with a fourth-place finish. Student Kevin Kaumans was named to the All-Region team.
Student of the month was Karlie Heatherman for High School and Rebekka Carlson for Junior High. Mr. Ofiu received the Traveling Elk award for this month that goes to a teacher who promotes positivity, is a team player and leads by example by giving their best.
Spears reported that FCA had great student and community participation at See you at the Pole. Seniors have been busy with college days and attended the college fair at NWOSU. The District ACT was completed on Oct. 5.
FFA has been busy with numerous activities and events. The officers attended the NW Area Colt Conference. Greenhand night was completed with Haylee Jantz winning the opportunity to attend the National Convention with all participants achieving their membership. The Opening Ceremonies' team finished in the top 8, students showed their animals at the Oklahoma City and Tulsa state fairs and FFA students also participated in clay shooting.
Principal Pedersen reported that the local fire department visited the pre-K to second grade on Oct. 4 for Fire Prevention Week. The lower elementary classes had a field trip to Rustic Roots in Lamont and the upper elementary classes had a field trip to the Menagerie in Alva before fall break.
There was good turnout for the Parent-Teacher Conferences, Red Ribbon Week was October 25-29 and the Spook Parade was Friday, Oct. 29.
The Character Ed Program is going well and this month's character trait is focused on individuality.
In basketball the elementary had games this week playing Medford. The girls won 21-8. The boys lost 29-14.
The junior high and elementary teams opentheir season Thursday against the newly merged team, Aline-Cleo-Freedom. Then next Tuesday the BHS Elks and Lady Elks will open their season on the road at Cimarron.
