Three Ranger football players named to the All-GAC Conference Team

ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State Football concluded their 2021 season over the weekend with a win over Southwestern 31-28. Following the conclusion of the season, the Great American Conference announced its yearly awards Tuesday afternoon. The Rangers were recognized with three players earning conference team members following a successful year.

The three Rangers' individuals include Romello Bentley earning first-team honors for a utility player in the Great American Conference and second-team honors as a return specialist. Brian Holiday received first-team awards as one of the defensive tackles, and Gavin Garner earned second-team All-GAC honors after his standout season.

Bentley earned first-team utility honors along with second-team return specialist as the Northwestern senior had a solid season as the Red-and-Black's kick returner and wide receiver this season. He finished the season with 158 receiving yards on the year with his game-high 43 yards with a touchdown in the Oklahoma Baptist game. He concluded the season with two touchdowns on the year. The Jacksonville Florida native returned 26 kicks this season for 558 yards on the year. This was good for a 21.5 average and fifth in the Great American Conference in kick returns this season.

"This is a great honor for these three individuals. I am happy to see the conference recognize them for their work this season. Gavin was a huge weapon for our offense and achieved a lot this season. Holiday was a big force on our defense putting pressure on the opponents. Romello was a tremendous two-way player offensively and on special teams throughout the season helping setup the offense from returns" stated head coach Matt Walter on the players’ awards.

The Rangers junior from Waco, Texas, Holiday earns first-team recognition after a tremendous season for the Northwestern defensive tackle. He finished the 2021 season with 65 total tackles on the year, including 40 assists and 25 solo tackles. He earned Great American Conference defensive player of the week once this year following a 14 tackle week. The Texas native had 14 total tackles for a loss for 55 yards this season. Holiday also finished the season with one quarterback hurry and 5.5 sacks for a loss of 36 yards. He was eight in the conference in sacks, third in tackles for a loss, and 14th in the conference in total tackles.

Garner completed a phenomenal season for the Rangers offense as the number one receiver for Northwestern. The Newcastle, Oklahoma native had 1099 yards on the year with 12 touchdowns this season. He tied the Northwestern career record for most touchdowns at 25. This earned the Northwestern wideout a spot on the All-GAC second team. He had over 100 receiving yards in six of the eleven games. His season-high was 173 yards, and his touchdown-high was three against Arkansas-Monticello. He was second in the conference in receiving yards this year, averaging exactly 100 per game. His 12 touchdowns were good for fifth in the conference.
