Redistricting won't change our district

November 24, 2021

The Legislature convened in special session Nov. 15 to finalize the redistricting process.

Legislative and congressional districts, by law, must be redrawn every ten years following the U.S. Census. The goal is to make sure each district has equal representation as population shifts. Data was delayed this year causing the need for special session.

I know there's been some contention over the maps that were drawn for the congressional districts, but the controversy is centered around Oklahoma City. Our Congressional district was not going to change, at least in our area.

We held many public meetings throughout the state over the past year to get input into the redistricting process, and we took public map submissions. I believe the final product is fair as it ensures adequate rural representation.

While we held our special session, House Republicans also held a Caucus retreat to discuss several issues of concern to our constituents. Among those are medical marijuana and state infrastructure needs. We also heard from the state's new Attorney General John O'Connor. I was very impressed with his care and concern over moving Oklahoma forward. I'm pleased with his ideas for how to protect our rights and personal liberties here in our state, especially at a time when there seems to be many attempts at federal overreach.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to express my gratitude for my life and my family and the many blessings we all enjoy. I'm also thankful for the many ways God has continued to bless our state both in terms of our personal values and liberties but also in our finances. We have a very good economic outlook at the moment. After serving in years of budget shortfall, having good economic years are a blessing. I'm always thankful when we have enough to help meet our needs.

I hope that each of you have an enjoyable holiday and get to spend some time with those you love.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. You may reach me by email at [email protected], or phone me at 405-557-7339. May God bless you and the State of Oklahoma.
