Independents again may vote in Oklahoma Democratic primary

December 5, 2021

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma voters registered as an independent will again be allowed to vote in the state Democratic Party's primary election, according to state Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax.

The Democratic Party has sent notification that it will allow independents to vote in the party's 2022 and 2023 primaries, Ziriax said Friday.

"This means, there is no change for unaffiliated voters in 2022," Ziriax said. "As was the case in 2020 and 2021, independent voters may vote in Democratic Party primaries."

Oklahoma is a closed primary state, meaning only voters registered with a recognized political party may vote in that party's primary, unless the party agrees to open its primaries.

The state Republican Party has not notified the election board of its intent while the Libertarian Party has said it will close its primaries. according to Ziriax.

Under state law, because the Democratic Party decided to allow independents to vote in its primaries, the Republican and Libertarian parties have until Dec. 15 to make a final decision about allowing independents to vote in their primaries, Ziriax said.
