Runway lights inoperable for two months

• Airport Commission looks at temporary fix

The lack of nighttime runway lighting at the Alva Regional Airport not only impacts fuel sales, but it also prevents fixed-wing medical aircraft from landing at night. The runway lights have been disabled since Oct. 22 while a solution is sought.

Aircraft have their own landing lights which can make it possible to land on an unlighted runway at night, but it is more hazardous. Once a plane gets close enough to the runway, the stripes on it are reflective which will help guide them in. Medi-flights are not allowed to make night landings on unlighted runways.
