Goldbugs still undefeated with 72-28 Blackwell win

The undefeated Alva Goldbugs traveled to Blackwell Tuesday to take on the Maroons. The two teams played in December for Alva’s homecoming with the Goldbugs winning 65-18. Jaxon Jones was on the court for the first time this season after recovering from a surgery.
The Goldbugs dominated the scoreboard leading 22-13 at the end of the first quarter Tuesday. The halftime score was Alva 36, Blackwell 19. The Goldbugs really took over in the last half of the game, leading 60-23 at the end of the third and winning the game 72-28.
First Half
Alva’s Austin Reed opened the scoring with a basket after Braden Hofen won the tip-off. Skylar Landwehr tied the score with a Blackwell basket. Jackson Feely scored on an offensive rebound and put-back. Then Blackwell freshman Drake Hankins sank a three to give Blackwell the lead at 5-4.
That didn’t last long as Feely made back-to-back baskets. Reed stole the ball and went to the rim for two points. Hofen made a lay-in on a Reed assist, and Alva now led 10-5.
Charlie Lux scored a trey for Blackwell. Feely went for another basket that didn’t fall in, but he grabbed the rebound and stuck the ball through the hoop. Alva was up 14-8. Kyler Penco scored an Alva basket. Feely stole the ball and Reed capitalized with a basket. The Goldbugs now led 18-8.
Hankins sank a three-pointer followed by a Lux basket to narrow the point margin. Then Jones scored an Alva basket which was followed by two points from Daylon Malone on a Jones assist. At the end of the first quarter, Alva led 22-13.
The Maroon’s Warren Gerboth made the first basket of the second period. Jones made a basket but it was negated by a prior foul on the floor. Reed scored from three-point range for the Goldbugs. Then Reed picked off a pass and fed it to Philip Randall for another two points. Alva now led 27-15.
Hankins scored for Blackwell, and Penco answered with two for Alva. An injury timeout was called as Hankins took a hard fall into the bleachers. He was able to walk to the bench but did not return to the game.
Landwehr scored for Blackwell. Feely made a basket for the Goldbugs. Then Feely picked off a Maroons pass and gave it to Slater who shot it to Hofen. He scored on the layup. Alva now led 33-19. Slater was fouled while shooting and made one of two shots. Hofen finished out the quarter with an Alva layup. The Goldbugs led 36-19 going into halftime.
Second Half
Penco made back-to-back treys to lead off the third quarter. Lux sank a jumper for Blackwell. Hofen was fouled and made one of two chances. Penco picked off the ball and went down the lane to score. Malone stole the ball and scored. Hofen made another basket. The Goldbugs had now pulled ahead to lead 49-21
Jones was fouled as he went for a basket and made one of two from the free throw line. Weston Tucker tried for an Alva basket that didn’t go in. He got his own rebound and put it back in. Tucker was fouled and added a third point from the charity stripe. Jones scored on an assist from Chuck Shelite. Alva now led 55-21.
Tucker stole the ball, giving Malone the chance at the basket. It didn’t go in but he was fouled and made one of two free throws. Randall was next at the charity stripe for a one-and-one, and he made two points for Alva. Tucker added another Alva basket, and Lux added one for the Maroons to finish the third quarter. Alva led 60-23.
Gerboth opened scoring in the final period with a Blackwell basket. Randall made two points from the free throw stripe. Lantz Mathers picked off a Blackwell pass and scored on a layup for Alva. Jordan Lohmann followed with an Alva trey. The Goldbugs now led 67-25.
Mathers went to the charity stripe and scored on one of two tries. Cameron Longhurst got on the scoreboard for Alva with a basket. Mathers added another basket. Mathew Jackson added a final trey for the Maroons to finish the game. The Goldbugs won 72-28.
Wrap-Up
The Goldbugs are now 9-0 for the season. Leading the Alva scoring was Penco with 12 points followed by Feely with ten. Reed and Hofen each had nine while Randall had six. Malone, Jones, Tucker and Mathers had five points each. Lohmann had three, Longhurst two and Slater one.
For Blackwell, Lux led with nine while Hankins had eight. Landwehr and Gerboth had four each, and Jackson had three.
Next up the Goldbugs were set to face Woodward in the first round of the Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm on Thursday.
