Ladybugs beat Blackwell 54-30 Tuesday

For the second time this season, the Alva Ladybugs took on the Lady Maroons and came away with a decisive win. Last time it was a 66-28 victory for homecoming. Tuesday night the Ladybugs traveled to Blackwell in the first game since their loss to Perry.
Alva came out strong in the first quarter to lead 16-6 but lost ground in the second for a narrow 23-18 margin at the half. After the break, the Ladybugs held Blackwell to six points in each of the final quarters to win 54-30.
First Half
Natasha Hindman was the only Lady Maroon who managed to score in the first quarter with three baskets for six points. The Ladybugs made only four baskets but were accurate at the free throw line, making eight points for eight chances.
Freshman Lakin Gaddy started off the scoring for Alva, but Hindman answered to tie. Mary Kate Foster was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Again Hindman scored to tie the game at four. Freshman Jaycee Kelln hit a basket, but again Hindman answered to tie the game at six.
Alva then went on a ten-point run with baskets from Kelln and Foster plus four free throws by Chloe Durkee and two from Kelln. At the end of the first quarter, the Ladybugs led 16-6.
The second period was a game of threes. Gaddy opened scoring in the second quarter by sinking an Alva three-pointer. Bostyn Chambers made a trey for Blackwell. Following two made free throws by Brooke Perez, Kinley Botts hit another three for the Lady Maroons to pull within eight points at 20-12. Foster sank a three for Alva to widen the lead. Kellyn Botts made one of two tries from the free throw stripe. Then Raven Gummow made her only score of the game with a three-pointer. The Ladybug lead had dwindled to five points at the half 23-18.
Second Half
A recharged Ladybug team came on strong in the third quarter. Durkee stole the ball and went for the layup. It didn’t go in but Morgan Heath got the offensive rebound and a layup. She didn’t make it but was fouled, hitting one of two from the charity stripe. Bree Rowe scored a basket for Blackwell to pull within four at 24-20.
Finding an open lane, Perez made a break for the basket and scored two for Alva. She then added another basket on a Durkee assist. An unexpected bonus for the Ladybugs came when Kinley Botts became confused and made a basket on Alva’s end of the court putting Alva up by ten at 30-20.
Gaddy scored a basket followed by one from Hindman and Hallie Hamilton scored for the Ladybugs. Alva now led 34-22. Durkee made a basket followed by one from Kinley Botts to finish out the third quarter at Alva 36, Blackwell 24.
The Ladybugs continued the defensive pressure in the fourth, holding the Lady Maroons to six points while scoring 18 for Alva. Gaddy again started the quarter, this time with a three-pointer. Durkee drove in for a layup, and Perez added a basket to widen the Alva lead to 43-24.
Kinley Botts scored for the Lady Maroons, and Keitlyn Rios scored on a stick-back. Then Kellyn Botts made a jump shot. Alva now led 43-30. Gaddy banked in another Alva trey followed by baskets from Kelln and Perez. Hamilton made a jump shot, and Kelln added one final basket just seconds before the buzzer. The Ladybugs won 54-30.
Wrap-Up
The Alva Ladybugs are now 7-2 for the season. Scoring in Tuesday’s game was led by two freshmen as Gaddy had 13 and Kelln 10. Perez had nine, Durkee eight and Foster seven for the game. Hamilton scored four and Heath one.
Blackwell scoring was led by Hindman with ten and Kinley Botts with seven. Kellyn Botts, Chambers and Gummow each had three. Rowe and Rios scored two each.
The Ladybugs were headed to the Wheat Capital Tournament at Chisholm on Thursday morning to take on Woodward in the first round.
