In the fall semester of 1966 while driving to Alva’s town square in Joe Budney’s well used Malibu convertible, I mentioned that some of the local employers of students might be turned off by Joe’s heavy midwestern U.S. accent, which readily identified him as a “Yank” in 1966. He merely smiled, and said, “Do you think I ought to sprinkle some ‘you alls’ throughout our conversations?” I merely nodded doubtfully in response.
