Ladybugs win 48-32 over Chisholm Friday

The Alva Ladybugs hosted the Chisholm Lady Longhorns Friday night and won 48-32. It was the second meeting this season for the teams and the second win for Alva.

The score was close in the first quarter with the Ladybugs leading 13-10. Alva widened the lead in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to 12 for Chisholm and a 29-22 halftime score. Both teams had difficulty hitting baskets in the third with Alva making only ten points to seven for Chisholm. The Ladybugs held their opponents to just three points in the final period while making nine points themselves for the 48-32 final. It was a hard-fought game with three players fouling out in the last quarter.

First Half

Alva's Brooke Perez was hot in the first quarter, scoring nine points. She made the first basket of the game, was fouled and added a free throw. Alice Watkins followed with a Chisholm basket, but her next shot was blocked by the Ladybugs. Perez scored again on a Mary Kate Foster assist. But Grace Winter was fouled and made both shots for Chisholm. Alva led by only one at 5-4.

Perez was next at the charity stripe, making both free throws. Chisholm freshman Avery Lane contributed a three-pointer to tie the game at seven. That didn't last long as Perez found the basket again. Watkins made one of two from the free throw line, and Alva led 9-8. Chloe Durkee made a nice jump shot, but Watkins answered with another basket. Jaycee Kelln scored for Alva, and the Ladybugs led 13-10 at the end of the first period.

The second quarter opened with a three-pointer from Watkins to tie the game at 13. Watkins grabbed an offensive rebound and made another basket. Hallie Hamilton scored for Alva, and the game was tied at 15. Watkins went to the foul line, but made only one of her two shots.

Kelln scored a basket and was fouled but missed the free throw. Winter was fouled and made both shots to put Chisholm up 18-17. Lakin Gaddy hit a jumper for Alva, and Durkee added a basket to widen the Ladybug lead. Then Durkee sank a nice three-pointer to put Alva in front 24-18.

Emma Green made two free throws for Chisholm. Kelln followed with an Alva basket. Then Morgan Heath stole the ball and gave Durkee the chance for another trey. Emma Tennell went to the line and made both shots of a one-and-one. That closed out the scoring for the half with the Ladybugs leading 29-22. Perez was heavily guarded during the second quarter and couldn't get to the basket.

Second Half

Neither team was able to score as the third quarter opened. Finally Kelln broke the drought with a pretty left-handed shot for Alva. Lane found an opening and hit a three-pointer for Chisholm. Mary Kate Foster went to the free throw line and made one of two chances for Alva. Perez picked off a Chisholm pass and took the ball to the rim but it didn't go in. She was fouled and made her two points from the free throw line. Alva led 34-25.

Winter scored for the Lady Longhorns, and then Gaddy hit a deep Alva basket. Watkins added another two points for Chisholm, cutting Alva's lead to seven at 36-29. Kelln went to the charity stripe and made one of two. The quarter ended with Alva leading 37-29.

As the final quarter opened, Alva widened the margin with baskets from Perez and Kelln. Winter hit one of two free throws, but Alva led 41-30. Perez was fouled as she made a basket but couldn't get the free throw to fall. Foster made one free throw and Durkee two. Watkins scored a basket, and Gaddy made two free throws to finish the game. Alva won 48-32.

In the final quarter, Hamilton fouled out for the Ladybugs. Soon after Winter fouled out for Chisholm. Just before the game ended, Watkins also went to the bench with five fouls.

Wrap-Up

Leading the Alva scoring was Perez with 15 followed by Durkee with 12 and Kelln with 11. Gaddy made six points, Hamilton two and Foster two.

The Chisholm scoring was led by Watkins with 15 while Winter had seven and Lane six. Tennell and Green had two each.

The Ladybugs now have a 10-4 season record while Chisholm fell to 5-8. The Ladybugs will have another game at home on Tuesday night at 6:30 when the Newkirk Lady Tigers come to town. The Pawhuska tournament will follow Thursday through Saturday.
