Alva Arena Authority receives update on funding

February 4, 2022

The Alva Arena Authority met Tuesday for an update on the project to build an arena and exhibition hall east of Alva. Gregg Glass presided over the meeting with members Dr. Janet Cunningham, Darrel Kline, Jim Hood, Daren Slater and Todd Holder present.

No action was taken on filling the trustee seat left vacant by the death of Dr. Charles Tucker. That seat is to be filled by a member of the Alva Tourism Committee. Holder said they have not heard from the committee on that appointment.

Holder gave the treasurer’s report. The authority has $90,173.22 in the bank, the same as last month. Holder said there will be additional architectural fees which have not been billed yet.

Trustees went into executive session mainly to discuss financing of the project. When they returned to open session, Holder made a motion to accept the design committee’s suggestion of phasing of the project in order to meet current cash flow needs. Kline seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.

Hood said the design committee recently held their 171st meeting. The most recent work was to determine the priorities of the different parts of the project since costs have risen with recent inflation.

On behalf of the funding committee, Holder said they are still seeking a USDA guarantee but they are also exploring limited guarantee offers.

The next regular meeting of the arena authority is March 8.
