Alva Ladybugs defeat Tonkawa on the road, 48-28

The Alva Ladybugs traveled to Tonkawa Tuesday night to take on the Lady Buccaneers. After the first quarter, it looked like smooth sailing for the Ladybugs, but a third quarter rally by the Lady Bucs cut into the lead. The Alva girls were able to take control of the final quarter and secure a 48-28 victory.

Alva led 19-2 after the first quarter with the only Tonkawa points coming on free throws. The Lady Bucs did a little better in the second quarter, but still made four of their nine points on free throws. The Ladybugs led 32-11 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Tonkawa girls upped their defense, holding Alva to just four points. The Ladybugs still led 36-23 at the end of three. In the final period, it was the Lady Bucs who were held to five points while Alva scored 12 to take the win 48-28.

First Half

The Ladybugs powered to a 17-0 lead before the Lady Bucs finally scored on a couple of free throws. A final basket by Alva brought the first quarter score to 19-2. Contributing to the Alva lead were Brooke Perez with seven, Mary Kate Foster with four, and five Ladybugs with two points: Lakin Gaddy, Hallie Hamilton, Jaycee Kelln and Morgan Heath.

Tonkawa opened the second quarter with their first basket of the game from Brooklyn Day. The Ladybugs scored baskets from Alaina Pierce, Hamilton and Chloe Durkee. Then Gaddy hit a three-pointer to put Alva up 28-4.

Karlee Jacobs went to the free throw line to make two points for Tonkawa. Hamilton hit another Alva basket, and K. Jacobs went to the foul line again, making both shots. Kelln snagged her own missed shot and put it in for an Alva basket. Nora Jacobs finished out the scoring with a three from the right wing. Alva led 32-11 at halftime.

Second Half

Perez opened the third quarter with a basket on a Hamilton assist. Then Tonkawa went on a 12-point unanswered run. Emma Owen’s basket was followed by a trey from Day. Then Day hit a two-point basket. Jaci Johnson got on the scoreboard with a basket, and K. Jacobs topped off the run with a three-pointer. Just before the quarter ended, Durkee ended the Ladybug drought with two points off the glass. The Ladybugs led 36-23 at the end of three.

Day hit another three for the Lady Bucs as the final quarter opened. Gaddy answered with a basket from three-range. Durkee was fouled on her shot attempt and made both free throws. Then Gaddy sank another three-pointer, and Alva led 44-26.

Kelln made two Alva points on a tip-in. K. Jacobs scored a basket for the Lady Bucs. Perez finished the quarter with a basket on a Foster assist. Alva won by 20 points, 48-28.

Wrap-Up

The Ladybugs are now 14-7 for the season. Perez and Gaddy led the scoring with 11 points each. Hamilton, Durkee and Kelln each had six. Foster had four points while Pierce and Heath had two apiece.

The Lady Buccaneers drop to 5-12 for the season. They were led by Day with 12 followed by K. Jacobs with nine and N. Jacobs with three. Owen and Johnson each had two points.

The Ladybugs were scheduled to play Frontier on Friday, but that was canceled due to snowy road conditions and will not be made up. The final game of the regular season will be Tuesday night as the Ladybugs host Woodward for senior night. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.

District playoff pairings have been released with Alva to host Blackwell on Saturday, Feb. 19.
