Man who fired into Wichita party pleads guilty to murder

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita man who police say killed a man from South Carolina and injured three other people when he shot into a crowd at a party has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Markeithen E. "Red" McClaine, 28, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He was scheduled to go to trial on a first-degree murder charge, The Wichita Eagle reported.

Airman 1st Class Chancelor J. Williams, of of Spartanburg, South Carolina, who was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, was shot in the neck and died at the scene.

McClaine went to pick up a friend at a party at an apartment complex on July 27, 2019, when a fight broke out in the parking lot, according to an arrest affidavit.

The car McClaine was in was surrounded but eventually allowed to drive away. Police said McClaine ordered the driver to stop, got out and fired at least six shots into the crowd.

McClaine will be sentenced April 21.
