Burlington School Board calls for public meeting on proposed bond issue March 31

Bond election April 5

Board President Terry Graham called the March 3 special meeting to order at 7 p.m., with three other members present: Robert Hill, April Kisling and Aaron Smith. T.J. Rockenbach was absent. Superintendent Kevin Brown, HS/JH Principal Gerrett Spears and Minutes Clerk Tracy Granados were also present. Attending as guests were: Apryl Burleson, Roy Easley, Seth Benson and Lindsey Callison.

There's a second public meeting date set for the proposed bond issue. The board set the date for March 31 at 6 p.m., in the BHS gymnasium. The architects will make a presentation regarding the potential school construction plans. The $10.5 million bond issue calls for building a new gymnasium; relocating the cafeteria into The Little Gym; a new FFA greenhouse; relocating some elementary classrooms into existing locker rooms.

The board approved PO #230 for the Alfalfa County Election Board Secretary for $2,000. This is for bond election expenses and the payment of $686.86 for the pre-election expense claim.

Seth Benson and Roy Easley of Easley Associates presented renderings to the board of the plans for the potential school construction projects. That is pending the passing of the bond issue on April 5.

Following executive session, the board approve the resignations of Vaughn Blankenship and Bayli Hyde. Blankenship was the boys basketball coach and is moving back to McAlester where his wife is ill. Hyde was working in Burlington School's daycare and is moving on. Superintendent Brown read their letters of resignation. The superintendent and board thanked Blankenship and Hyde for their service to the school and thanks to both for their time here at Burlington.

The superintendent discussed a potential student drug testing policy for the 2022-2023 school year. High School Principal Spears discussed the approval of a drug policy prior to the first part of May because there will be a pre-enrollment in the spring for the 2022-2023 school year. Administrators think it would be good to include all updated policies that are possible. This item was tabled as there is more work to be done on it. The subject will be addressed at the next regular board meeting.

Brown updated the board on the Daycare licensing. He discussed installing carports at the school houses on 702 6th Avenue and 602 Myrtle. The board directed Brown to proceed with the carports for the two school houses.

The meeting started at 7 p.m., and adjourned at 9:28.
