The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7 signals a change in what people thought was acceptable to God. The old law, the Law of Moses, that Jews of Jesus’ day knew so well was about to be nailed to the Cross. The people were expecting and hoping for a king to send the Romans back to Rome. Instead, there was a Messiah with new teachings.

Jesus says numerous times in this sermon, “You have heard it said, but I say.” God has always wanted people’s hearts. The old law had many sacrifices and feast days to keep people close to Him. But you can do ritual sacrifices and keep feasts and still...
