Waynoka voters approve swimming pool sales tax


Waynoka voters approved a one-cent sales tax increase to pay for a new swimming pool in the April 5 election. A majority of 84.82 percent voted in favor of the sales tax which will take effect July 1, 2022. A total of 191 votes were cast in the election with 162 in favor and 29 against. The sales tax will remain in effect through June 30, 2039.

Voters in the Waynoka school district turned down a proposition for a $1.7 million bond issue to construct, equip, repair and remodel school buildings; acquire school furniture, fixtures and equipment; and acquire and improve school sites. A 3/5 or 60 percent majority is required to pass school bond issues. Only 145 people voted in favor of the bond issue while 147 voted against.

About two-thirds of Town of Freedom voters were against a proposition to make the city clerk/treasurer an appointed instead of elected position. The proposition was defeated as a 63.89 percent majority voted against the measure with 26 in favor and 46 against so that office remain an elected position.

Burlington school district voters approved a $10.5 million bond issue by a 73.85 percent majority on April 5. The bond issue will pay for a new gymnasium and fitness center, a cafeteria and kitchen renovation, moving classrooms to existing lockers rooms and building an FFA greenhouse. The proposition passed by a vote of 161 in favor and 47 against.

Heather Collins won a seat on the Cherokee School Board. Collins defeated Amber K. Wilhite by a 75 to 61 vote for Office No. 2 on the board.

Justin Barney won the election for Timberlake School Board Office No. 2 by a majority of 76.82 percent. He garnered 169 votes compared to 51 for Kodee Shaklee Nickel.

These are unofficial results. Voting results do not become official until 5 p.m. today (April 8), allowing time for protests.
