Waynoka man charged with embezzlement

Two Woods County warrants have been issued for a Waynoka man.

Court records show on April 2 Waynoka Police Officer Ian Thorp received a report about stolen property. He spoke with Lyle Bellmon, the property owner, who said he hired Jeromy Cleaver to do some odd jobs for him. Bellmon said he received a call from Cleaver on March 31 about selling the frame to a shed.

Bellmon said he later told Cleaver he would sell the frame for $1,000, and told him to make the arrangement for the exchange. Cleaver called Bellmon several more times working out the arrangement. He told Bellmon the buyer would be there either late Friday or middle of the day on Saturday.

Bellmon said on April 1 he received another call telling him the buyer would be there after 5 p.m. on Saturday. Bellmon told Cleaver that would be fine; he would be back from Woodward by noon that day.

Once Bellmon got back from Woodward, he noticed that the frame was missing and went next door to his neighbor to ask if he had seen anything. His neighbor said they actually loaded it the day before, but he thought the deal was legit and didn’t think any more of it. Bellmon said he made attempts to contact Cleaver to retrieve his money but he got no response.

Later on April 2 about 6:30 p.m. Officer Thorp received a call on his personal phone from Bobbie Jean Jones asking him to come to her house because she thought they might have bought a stolen building.

When Thorp arrived at Jones’ house, he made contact with her, Michael Hommertzheim and Bellmon. Hommertsheim said he got a call from a friend saying Cleaver had a building for sale if he was interested. Hommertzheim made contact with Cleaver who told him the building was 30 feet by 30 feet and was for sale for $1,200.

Hommertzheim measured the building and told Cleaver it was only 20 feet by 20 feet. Cleaver then told him he would contact Bellmon about lowering the price, but according to Bellmon it never happened. Cleaver contacted Hommertzheim later, telling him the new price was $1,000, and they agreed to meet on April 1 around 5 p.m. to make the deal.

Hommertzheim said once they arrived and loaded the building, he paid Cleaver $1,000 in cash. Hommertzheim also said while they were loading it, he noticed that Bellmon had driven by but didn’t stop so he had no reason to believe the deal wasn’t legitimate.

Thorp made attempts to contact Cleaver, but had not been able to find him.

On Sunday, April 3, about 2:48 p.m. Waynoka Police Officer Shawn Halper received a call from dispatch to go to the 1500 block of Waynoka Street for a man trying to enter a residence. He made contact with Shelly Wingo, the owner of the residence. She said a man either jumped her fence or managed to unlatch the gate and came to her door.

She said the man was banging on her front glass door and trying to get it opened. She called Woods County and told them a man was trying to break into her house. Wingo said she was on the phone to dispatch when the man took off running toward the railroad tracks, and she lost sight of him.

Wingo described the man as wearing a plaid shirt and a hat that said Waynoka on it. Officer Halper had just seen that man crossing Main Street in the vicinity of Miller Graphics as he was talking to a friend. The friend said the man told her not to tell anyone about him. She said he was wearing a plaid shirt and hat and identified him as Jeromy Cleaver. She said Cleaver was going through the alley toward the south.

On May 2 in Woods County, Jeromy Wayne Cleaver, 35, of Waynoka, was charged with embezzlement, a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for not more than two years or by a fine not to exceed $5,000, or by both such fine and imprisonment and restitution.

Cleaver was also charged with breaking and entering with unlawful intent, a misdemeanor. This crime is punishable by a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both

Warrants have been issued for Cleaver on both charges.
