Memorial Day – Why do we pause to remember?

 

Along the backroads of Oklahoma and the Great Plains, in towns like Alva, you'll see them – people in cemeteries, quietly and solemnly walking from tombstone to tombstone. They come to tidy up the site, pay respects, and make sure memory of a loved one isn't lost in the ashes of history.

Watch closely and you'll see them kneel to place a flower or small flag or both on the gravesite. Eventually, they'll also kneel in front of the tombstone, and slowly move their fingers over the letters and messages forever etched there.
