Alva man accused of sending harassing text messages

An Alva man has been charged with harassment after allegedly sending cellphone text messages containing lewd, lascivious, filthy or indecent comments, requests, suggestions and proposals to two adult males in Woods County.

According to court records, on May 23, a man told District Attorney Investigator Steve Tanio that he had been receiving harassing text messages on his cellphone while in Woods County. He told Tanio approximately six months ago he received an anonymous handwritten note that was left on his vehicle while it was parked at an Alva business. The note from an unknown male requested to meet with and get to know him.

The individual said he ignored the note; however he began receiving unsolicited text messages on his cellphone from an unknown number. He ignored most of these texts.

Approximately two months ago while he was driving, a man in a truck with Oklahoma tags who identified himself as “Brad” pulled up beside him and motioned to talk with him. The individual told Tanio he stopped, and “Brad” asked if he received his text messages and if he wanted to talk and get to know him. The individual told Tanio he declined and left.

On May 16, he received another text from the same phone number that was sexually explicit.

On May 23, Tanio was able to identify the phone number from which the harassing texts were being sent as belonging to Bradley Allen Burdick of Alva.

On June 3, Tanio and other law enforcement officers executed a lawful search warrant on the residence in the 1300 block of College Boulevard in Alva. Burdick was located at the residence and interviewed. A cellphone was located and seized from Burdick.

According to the affidavit, during a post-Miranda, videotaped interview, Burdick admitted he had repeatedly contacted the man who talked to Tanio, including by unsolicited text messages while using the cellphone that had been seized.

On June 6, another adult male reported he received numerous unsolicited harassing text communications on his cellphone from Burdick while in Woods County. This included sexually explicit text communications on April 3.

Bradley Allen Burdick, 46, of Alva, was charged with violation of Oklahoma statute via computer, a felony. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for not more than five years or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or by both such imprisonment and fine.

Burdick is also charged with two misdemeanor counts of harassment by use of an electronic device. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to one year in county jail and/or up to $1,000 fine.
