Woods County American Farmers & Ranchers (AFR) has awarded three local students with AFR County/Local Match Scholarships. Ko Brooks, Mattie Pettus and Kathleen Leeper, all of Alva, each received a $500 scholarship. Brooks plans to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University to study biology pre-veterinarian with a minor in animal science. Pettus plans to attend Oklahoma State University to study plant and soil sciences. Leeper plans to attend Northern Oklahoma College to study agriculture business.

This scholarship is available through the AFR County/Local Match Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to local youth through a matching partnership between the county organization and the AFR state cooperative.

The AFR County/Local Match Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Eligible students have a family member that is an AFR member. Applications will be judged on organization knowledge and involvement, leadership activities, scholastic achievement and financial need.

The AFR County/Local Match Scholarship is just one of many AFR Youth Program traditions. The organization also hosts a statewide speech contest, a youth leadership summit, statewide scholarships, livestock judging and cattle grading competitions, and many other development opportunities.

For more information on scholarship opportunities or other youth activities, visit the AFR Cooperative website at http://www.afrcoop.org or contact AFR Youth Coordinator Tailor Atkinson at 405-218-5566 or [email protected]
