This story is about a strange and tragic event that occurred in 1970. One person died but, as is so often the case, the survivor was never the same again.

The deceased man was a young African American who grew up in the town where the incident happened and was home on leave from the U.S. Army.

The man who survived was a prominent Caucasian who had married a local girl and moved to the town. As such, some people saw him as a nice addition to the population, but – as is common almost everywhere – most locals considered him an outsider.
