Former NWOSU campus police chief arrested in Kansas

John Philip Caviness of Alva was arrested Sunday, July 31, for child abuse, aggravated battery and resisting arrest.

According to a report from WIBW, former Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus police chief is facing child abuse and battery charges following his arrest in Wabaunsee County, Kansas. The location is east of Topeka.

WIBW reports John Philip Caviness of Alva was arrested Sunday, July 31, for child abuse, aggravated battery and resisting arrest.

Caviness was announced as the new campus police chief at NWOSU on May 2. He is no longer employed there. Prior to that position he was employed nine years with the Alva Police Department.

Caviness graduated from NWOSU in 1998 and graduated from the Topeka Police Academy in 2001, working for several years as a deputy for the Jackson County, Kansas, Sheriff's Office.

According to WIBW, Caviness' first court appearance has been set for Aug. 30.
