Leaving a spiritual legacy

September 23, 2022

As many of us look to the future, we may have concerns about what we will leave our children and relatives. What kind of legacy will you leave your family and friends? Now I know the first thoughts I think about, and perhaps you too, would be what you will be able to leave others financially. We all want to be financially sound so that we don’t have to worry about finances as we age, that we can also pass on those blessings to family, friends and others. We may also think about businesses that we can leave for others along with maybe homes or property. Maybe we would leave a legacy of good memories or moments of time spent together of days gone by.

But have you ever thought about the most important legacy that you can leave someone? Today with our busyness, it seems to be a legacy that we as parents and adults have forgotten about and have left to someone else to pass on to our children.

What I am talking about is a spiritual legacy. With our busy schedules and so many activities, I find myself not making time for a legacy that would last forever. We as adults are not taking the time to talk with our children about our faith in Jesus and are leaving it to others (namely the church) to do it for us. But as an adult and as a parent, we are still the most influential person in our child’s life. What we do and say is the most powerful impact on them. Wouldn’t you agree, that passing on a spiritual legacy is the most important legacy? This legacy has eternal effects!! But how can I find time to start changing and working on my spiritual legacy? How can I pass on a desire in my children to be active in their faith?

Try some of the following to get you started:

Pray… pray for the Lord to give you guidance in sharing your faith with your children.

Talk … start talking with your children about your faith, why you believe what you believe.

Devotions … find time to have a devotion time with your child. Don’t know what to use?! Go over your child’s Sunday School lesson, watch a Christian video together and talk about it, find a devotion book from your church library.

Worship … Come and celebrate and worship our Lord together as a family! If you don’t have a home church, come and check out any of our many Christian churches in the Alva area.

May you be able to grow in your faith with your family and friends leaving a spiritual legacy for them!
