Rangers fall to Oklahoma Baptist

ALVA, Okla. – The Ranger football team continued conference play at home facing off in their third game of the year against Oklahoma Baptist Bison. Both teams battled back and forth with strong offensive plays and good defensive stops. A late third and fourth quarter touchdown allowed the Bison to pull away and clench the victory 31-23. Northwestern falls to 0-3 in conference play while Oklahoma Baptist advances to 1-2 on the season.

1st Quarter

Northwestern came out strong in the first quarter with an early touchdown from Torrence Stevens after the defense forced a three-and-out. A completed extra point from Connor O'Neal allowed Northwestern to gain a lead 7-0 against the visiting Bison. Oklahoma Baptist quickly responded back with a rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. The Rangers fired back with a 43 yard field goal from O'Neal to extend their first quarter lead 10-7.

2nd Quarter

With ten minutes left in the second quarter, the Bison ran a trick play to complete their second touchdown of the evening and take the lead at 14-10. The Ranger defense prevailed over a fake punt attempt by the Bison forcing a turnover on downs. However the Rangers did not capitalize as the Rangers went into halftime trailing 14-10.

3rd Quarter

After a strong third quarter defensive showing by the Rangers defense out of the locker room, which helped lead to a one yard quarterback sneak by Tanner Clarkson. This touchdown was the first points of the quarter as the Rangers gained a late 17-14 lead. Another completed extra point from O'Neal allowed the Rangers to climb ahead 17-14 for the lead through three quarters

4th Quarter

The Bison responded with a 56 yard rushing touchdown to recapture the lead 21-17. During the fourth quarter Oklahoma Baptist extended their lead, 24-17, with a completed 33 yard field goal kick. With four minutes remaining the Bison had another rushing touchdown with a completed extra point to further their lead 31-17. With one minute remaining, Torrence Stevens scored another touchdown with a 35 yard reception to leave the Rangers trailing 31-23. The final score would remain in favor of the Bison Saturday evening.

Northwestern hits the road to continue play in Ada as they compete with East Central University. The game will take place Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff against the Tigers.
