Is your glass half full or half empty?

“If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all, gloom despair, and agony on me,” are the words to a popular little song on the show “Hee Haw” back when I was a child. We would all sing along and laugh together as we watched that show.

We also watched a movie titled “Polyanna” in which the famous line, “... there is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it” was made famous, as Pollyanna set out on a mission to change the attitudes of an entire town to view everything in life to be good.

I have presented these two paradigms in hope that the reader would choose the latter one to live by in our everyday lives! So many times, we think of only the bad things that happen to us, and that will ultimately drag our spirits down to the gloom and despair that the song off “Hee Haw” talks about.

Yes, bad things happen to all of us, but there are so many good things that happen to us as well, if we do like Pollyanna and search long enough to find them. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

So, the question is how should we begin to find the happy in everything? Luke 6:38 says, “give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

Think about the situations in life that we consider roadblocks, hassles, or just plain bad luck. There is always a reason that things happen in our lives. The stop light that won’t turn green could hold us up long enough to avoid an accident two blocks away. The car that cut us off in traffic could have a husband taking his pregnant wife to the hospital to deliver a beautiful baby. The business deal that didn’t go through might have saved us from going bankrupt. There is a reason to be happy and give God the glory about everything that happens in this life!

God has a reason for letting things happen to us all, because He loves us and cares for our spiritual well-being. That’s called AGAPE love. Psalm 106:47 says, “Save us, LORD our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.”

Next time something happens that we think is just terrible, let’s stop for a moment and find the good that can come from it. So many things can be good for us if we just take the time to find them.

We invite you to join us at College Hill Church of Christ, 1102 College Blvd., every Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. for worship or follow us on Facebook at College Hill Church of Christ, Alva, Oklahoma. We are a fellowship of believers that follow God’s Word and love all who worship with us!
