Tempted and tried, part 1
November 25, 2022
We all have our temptations and trials that we go through, and we might ask ourselves, “How am I to escape or overcome?” In the Holy Scriptures, we know that we are encouraged to overcome our sins and temptations, but how does that work?
Well, in I Corinthians 10:13 it says, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” Have you ever wondered just exactly what that way of escape really is? Jesus gives a great example of one of the ways that we can escape the temptations and trials that Satan puts before us.
In Matthew chapter 4, you remember that Satan was tempting our Lord Jesus after he had been fasting 40 days in the desert. He tempted him to show that he was truly the son of God by turning stones into bread. Satan then took Jesus to the highest part of the temple and dared him to jump off to prove he was the son of God. He even quoted scripture to Jesus saying, “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Satan then took him to a high mountain and offered Jesus the kingdoms of the entire world if he would only bow down and worship him.
Our way of escape to the trials and temptations that Satan puts before us, is found in the Lord’s response to Satan at every temptation that he presented. His response is this, “It is written!” One way that we can escape for the trials and temptations of the evil one is to know the scriptures. “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God, Do not put the Lord your God to the test, and Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only”, are the three responses with which Jesus rebutted the Evil One.
We need to read and know the scriptures because they can help us escape the trials and temptations of the Evil One. We need to be in the word every day to grow a stronger relationship with our Lord through His word! Romans 10:17 says “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God!”
