Beyond all expectations

The people of Israel had been waiting a long time. They had endured war, famine, oppression and exile. They had been overrun by foreign nations that turned them from citizens into subjects. But they had never lost hope. They knew the promises God had made. He had promised to save, to redeem, to restore. He had promised to make everything right. And the people were expecting God to keep his promise. They were waiting for God to show up. They were expecting a king.

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In...
