Goldbugs dominate Blackwell 59-34
December 9, 2022
What happens when your leading scorer is benched for the last half of a basketball game? If you’re the Alva Goldbugs, the rest of the team steps up to take the victory. That’s how it happened at Blackwell Tuesday night when Alva won 59-34.
Coach Shane Feely has a firm rule. Any of his players called for a technical foul has to sit out for two quarters of play. Apparently, a repeat offender gets to sit out four quarters. One player paid the penalty earlier in the season, and Tuesday night Kyler Penco was the one on the bench. His offense was fairly mild and came after heckling from a Maroon player the referees didn’t catch. Penco scored 18 points in the first half, but his teammates stepped up and spread scoring duties around to finish the game.
First Quarter
Blackwell was first on the scoreboard with a three-pointer from Charlie Lux. After that the Goldbugs shut down Maroon scoring until the very end of the first period. Alva’s Weston Tucker tied the game with a trey. Penco added two with a layup off the glass. Jaxon Jones put another two points on the board for the Goldbugs. Kevin Rios went to the free throw line for Blackwell but missed both shots. Alva led 7-3.
Jones added a basket on a Penco assist. Tucker made one of two tries from the free throw line. Penco sank a basket, and Jones finished the Alva 14 point run with a stick-back on an offensive rebound. Peyton Jones finally added to Blackwell’s score with a basket. The quarter ended with Alva leading 14-5.
Second Quarter
Blackwell again led off the quarter with a three-pointer, this time from Drake Hankins. Warren Gerboth added a basket to cut Alva’s lead to four points. Penco sank a basket from three-point range, and Jones made good on an offensive rebound. Then Penco picked off a Blackwell pass, raced to the basket and scored. He was fouled in the process and made the bonus shot. Alva now led 21-10.
Penco added another basket on an assist from Daylon Malone. Nikolas Flyingout scored for Blackwell on a put-back. Penco scored from three-point range and was called for a technical foul. Hankins went to the charity stripe, making one of two attempts. Tucker went to the free throw line on a one-and-one but missed the first shot. Alva led 30-15 at halftime.
Third Quarter
Without Penco, Malone became energized, starting off the third quarter with a jump shot and a trey. Drake Wharton added a left-handed lay-up for Alva. Lux scored two points for Blackwell. Malone came back with another lay-up. Lantz Mathers came into the game and made his presence known with an offensive put-back. He was fouled and made the bonus point, too.
Aiden Faison sank a three-pointer on a Malone assist. Lux added two points for Blackwell. Malone went to the free throw line, making one of two tries. Blackwell’s Jones also scored a free throw. Lux finished out the quarter with a basket. Alva led 47-22 at the end of three quarters.
Fourth Quarter
Flyingout led off the quarter with a three-pointer. Wharton took the basketball to the rim for the Goldbugs. Gerboth added two for the Maroons. Malone made an Alva basket. Then Malone went to the free throw line on a one-and-one, making both tries. Alva now led 53-27.
Gerboth and Lux each added baskets for Blackwell followed by Flyingout with a trey. Alva’s Jordan Lohmann answered with a three-pointer for Alva and sophomore Kelan Penco finished out the game with a trey. Alva won 59-34.
