Ladybugs have decisive 50-27 win at Blackwell

The Alva Ladybugs traveled to Blackwell Tuesday night to take on the Lady Maroons. The Ladybugs, coached by Kris Gore, were 2-0 going into the game while Blackwell was 0-2. The Lady Maroons tied the Ladybugs 2-2 early in the first quarter, but the Alva team led through the remainder of the game to win 50-27.

First Quarter

Lakin Gaddy put the first points on the board after she grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball through the net. Blackwell’s Bree Rowe tied the score at 2-2, and several minutes elapsed before anyone scored again. Jaycee Kelln broke the drought with an Alva basket. Then Kelln was fouled on another trip to the hoop. She made both free throws, and Alva led 6-2.

Rowe was next at the charity stripe, making one of two shots. Gaddy increased the Ladybug lead with a three-pointer. Alva freshman Hadlee Ohm grabbed a teammate’s rebound, scored and was fouled. However, she missed the bonus point. Alva now led 11-3. Kinley Botts scored on on a jumper, and Kelln managed another basket before time ran out. Alva led 13-5 at the end of the first period.


Second Quarter

The Ladybug defense continued to dominate, holding the Lady Maroons to just two points in the second quarter. Gaddy added another trey for Alva. Then Ladybug Channing Ferguson was fouled. She missed both her free throw attempts. Rowe was next at the line, making one of two free throw tries. Ferguson scored a basket on an assist from Triniti Miller.

Kylie Adair scored another basket for Alva. Rowe went to the charity stripe and again made one of two chances. At halftime, the score was Alva 20, Blackwell 7.


Third Quarter

Blackwell did better in the third period as Bostyn Chambers scored eight of her team’s ten points. But Alva continued to lead, adding 14 points. Gaddy and Kelln had successful trips to the basket to start the quarter. Chambers was fouled and made good on one of two attempts. Carly Argo got on the scoreboard for Alva with a basket. Chambers scored a basket, and Alva was now leading 26-10.

Morgan Heath scored on a jumper for the Ladybugs then Chambers added another Blackwell basket. Kelln answered with two points. Ohm was sent to the free throw line where she made both bonus shots. Rowe added a basket for the Lady Maroons, and Chambers added a three-pointer. Ferguson scored a Ladybug basket. The quarter ended with Alva leading 34-17.


Fourth Quarter

Alva outscored Blackwell 16-10 in the final period to take the win. Kelln started off the scoring at the free throw line where she made one of two chances. Miller grabbed the rebound from Kelln’s miss and stuck it through the hoop. Miller was next at the stripe, making one of two.

After the four-point Alva run, Chambers scored a basket. Adair went to the line for Alva, making both free throws. Rowe added to Lady Maroon points on a stick-back. Gaddy had back-to-back trips to the free throw line, making all her shots and adding four points for Alva. The score was now Alva 44, Blackwell 21.

Kellyn Botts scored from three-point range for Blackwell. Kelln added two points for Alva. Lady Maroon Maysa Edgar got on the scoreboard with two points from free throws. Samantha Vowel added another Blackwell free throw. Ohm took care of the rest of the scoring, making two baskets for the Ladybugs. Alva won 50-27.


Wrap-Up

The Ladybugs were led in scoring by Gaddy with 14 points followed by Kelln with 13. Ohm had eight points in the game while Adair and Ferguson had four each. Miller made three points. Argo and Heath each had two.

Blackwell scoring was led by Chambers with ten while Rowe had nine. Kellyn Botts had three points while her twin Kinley Botts had two. Edgar added two points and Vowell one.

The Alva-NWOSU Shootout tournament began Thursday with the 3-0 Alva Ladybugs set to play South Barber at 6:00 p.m. The JV Ladybugs were to take on Seiling at 12:40 p.m. Thursday. The tournament continues through Saturday with all games at Alva High School.
