LOYD 'DALE' ROSS

December 11, 2022

Funeral services for Loyd "Dale" Ross will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Ruwaldt and Michael Meriwether officiating. Private interment will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Waynoka Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home.

Dale was born to Loyd Perry Ross and Virginia Juanita (Haltom) Ross on April 6, 1947, in Alva, Oklahoma. He passed from this life on December 9, 2022, at Share Convalescent Home, at the age of 75.

As a youth, Dale accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized at the Green Valley Church. He later taught the youth Sunday school class at the Dacoma Church of God. He was currently a member of the Alva First Baptist Church.

Dale attended Dacoma Schools, graduating in 1965. He was active in FFA, achieving the State Farmer and American Farmer degrees, while raising championship Duroc hogs. His passion was playing sports, excelling in basketball and baseball, which led to earning All-State honors in basketball. He then attended NWOSU on a basketball scholarship, scoring over 1,000 points in his career, and being selected to the all-conference team his junior year. He also played college baseball, twice earning all-conference honors. Dale graduated from NWOSU in 1969 with a degree in mathematics, and later received his Masters of Education. He also served in the National Guard from 1969 to 1975.

While attending NWOSU, he met his future wife, Sharon Mathers. They were married in Enid, Oklahoma, on March 29, 1969, celebrating over 53 years of marriage. To this union, three sons were born; Justin, Joey and Jayme. As a family, they enjoyed sports, farming, and many snow skiing vacations in Colorado. Dale got great joy out of watching his sons play sports and barking orders at them when it was time to do the farming. The highlight of his life was getting to be with his grandchildren, whether it was taking them to the farm to check the cows and letting them ride the 4-wheeler or watching them play sports or just teasing them.

His first job was at Burlington High School, where he taught mathematics and coached basketball, baseball and volleyball for 12 years. One of Dale's fondest memories was coaching the 1980 basketball team in the state tournament. In 1981, the family moved to Dale's hometown of Dacoma where he served as principal of Carmen-Dacoma Elementary for 14 years. This enabled him to run the family farm as a second job or "hobby". In 1995, he accepted the position as Superintendent of Waynoka schools, retiring in 2011. Through his 42-year career, he touched many students' lives as an educator, coach and administrator.

Dale served as a director of the Dacoma Farmers' Cooperative for over 30 years and was the president for many of those years. He was recognized as the Oklahoma Cooperative Director of the Year in 2006. While he was superintendent, he served on the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration board and was also president of the Tri-County Superintendents Association for several years.

During retirement, Dale enjoyed casually checking on his cows, golfing with his buddies (and occasionally his wife), many trips to watch his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and exploring new destinations with their friends.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Virginia Ross, and his in-laws, Clay and Mary Mathers. He is survived by his sons, Justin (Karen) of Tulsa, Joey (Jenny) of Tulsa, and Jayme (Paige) of Edmond; six grandchildren, Nora, Luke, Mary Kate, Hudson, Bennett, and Carter Ross, all of Tulsa; and one brother, Terry, of Pratt, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to OMRF (Alzheimer's) , Share Convalescent Home (Activities Fund), or First Baptist Church (Kitchen Fund), with Marshall Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
