Funeral services for Dr. Troy Smith will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Katie Hill officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home.

Troy Lee Smith, son of the late Lawrence Russell and Bonnie Ruth (Minton) Smith, was born January 5, 1954, at Liberal, Kansas, and passed away January 20, 2023, at Oklahoma City at the age of 69 years and 15 days.

Troy grew up in Turpin where he excelled in every facet of student life. He was a standout athlete and the Class of 1972 Valedictorian. He also was a graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University where he majored in biology and a double minor in both physics and psychology. While at Northwestern he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Deewall, and they were married on December 21, 1974, in Coldwater, Kansas. They made their way to Memphis, Tennessee, where he received his Doctor of Optometry degree (OD) from Southern College of Optometry.

After graduation, they returned to Alva and went into practice at Alva Vision Clinic. They raised their children, Tiffany, Tray and Tenille, in Alva. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Church Council, president of the NWOSU Foundation Executive Board, member of the Wesley House Board, Kiwanis Club (past Secretary and President) where he loved volunteering with the Little Olympics, member of the Quarterback Club, and president of the REC Park Board. He was a member of The American Optometric Association, Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians, Heart of America Contact Lens Society, and AOA Contact Lens Section. Throughout his 40 years in the community he served on multiple committees including the finance committee, Pastor Parrish Relations Committee, and was a Sunday school teacher at his church. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and past President. He also served on the NWOSU Foundation Board, the NWOSU Executive Board, the Alumni Board, and served as co-chairman with Liz of the NWOSU Scholarship drive for 25 years. Troy served on the HOACLS Board of Directors, as well as on the Oklahoma Board of Directors. He was the Oklahoma Optometric Association President elect 1999-2000 and President 2000-2001.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Smith; mother-in-law, Helen Deewall; father-in-law and wife, John and Jane Deewall.

Troy is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Smith of Alva; his children, Tiffany Eddy and husband, Thomas, of Bluffdale, Utah, Tray Smith and wife, Whitney, of Newcastle, and Tenille Smith of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Ty and Zoey Smith, and Trinity and Titus Eddy; his sister, Bonita Cox and husband, Glen, of Anderson, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Glenda Smith of Katy, Texas; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Alva Rec Center (with checks being made to Freedom West CDC), Northwestern Foundation for the Athletic Department or Music/Theatre Department, or the First United Methodist Church of Alva (Dr. Troy Smith memorial which will go towards funds for youth church camps).
