Ladybugs notch a win against Tonkawa

The Alva Ladybugs added another one to the win column Tuesday night as they hosted the Tonkawa Lady Buccaneers. Tonkawa put the first points on the board and led 4-2 early on, but the Ladybugs quickly took control of the game. At halftime, Alva led 27-11 following a big 15 point second quarter. By the third quarter, the Ladybugs had extended their lead to 41-16 and finally won the game 52-23.

First Half

Tonkawa senior Brooklyn Day scored first in the game, but Lakin Gaddy picked off a pass and raced to the basket for a reverse layup to tie. Kaedyn Warrior put up another two points for Tonkawa, but Morgan Heath tied the game at 4-4 with her jump shot. Ladybug freshman Channing Ferguson broke the tie and was fouled. She made the free throw, and Alva led 7-4. Hadlee Ohm hit one of two free throws, and Ferguson followed at the line, making one of two free throws. Sydnee Jacobs scored for Tonkawa to cut the lead to three, but freshman Kylie Adair sank a three-pointer from the left wing to widen the margin. Karlee Jacobs added a free throw for Tonkawa to end the quarter. Alva led 12-7.

Ladybug Carly Argo led off the second period with a trey from the right wing, and Adair added a basket on a left-handed layup. Addison Branson scored for Tonkawa, but the Ladybugs went on a 6-0 run with baskets from Ohm, Jaycee Kelln and Gaddy. S. Jacobs finally added two points to the Lady Bucs total, but Gaddy and Ohm finished out the scoring before the break. Alva led 27-11 at halftime.

Second Half

Heath started off the third quarter with an Alva basket. Warrior managed to make one of two foul shots for Tonkawa. Then Argo sank a three from the deep left corner. Gaddy stole the ball and raced for the layup. Argo followed with back-to-back treys, and Alva led 40-12. Day added a basket for Tonkawa. With seconds left, the Ladybugs stalled to go for the last shot. The Lady Bucs fouled Ohm who made one of two shots from the charity stripe. With possession of the ball, Tonkawa's Karter James found the basket for the final score of the quarter. The Ladybugs led 41-16 going into the final period.

Gaddy led off for Alva, taking the ball to the rim to score. K. Jacobs answered for Tonkawa. Gaddy scored again and was fouled, making the third point. Argo hit a basket on a pass from Ferguson. K. Jacobs then sank a three-point shot, the only made three for Tonkawa. Adair fought her way through defenders to reach the basket and score. She was fouled, but didn't make the shot. James scored for Tonkawa, and Argo finished out the game with a final Alva basket. The Ladybugs won 52-23.

Wrap-Up

Gaddy and Argo tied for top Alva scores with 16 each. Ohm was next with six followed by Heath, Adair and Ferguson with four points each. Kelln had two points.

Tonkawa was led by K. Jacobs with six points. Day, James and S. Jacobs each had four followed by Warrior with three and Branson with two.

The Alva Ladybugs are now 17-3 on the season as they travel to Red Rock to take on Frontier tonight at 6:30 p.m.
