Ladybugs lose to Luther, play Thursday in area

The Alva Ladybugs took on the Luther Lady Lions in the regional championship at Perry Saturday night. In the first quarter, the Alva girls trailed by nine points but cut that to a two-point deficit by quarter's end. The Ladybugs tied twice but could not gain the lead in the second with Luther up 24-23 at halftime. The Lady Lions added another point to their margin by the end of the third quarter and won 48-44 in a fourth quarter dominated by free throws.

The Alva Ladybugs fall to 22-4 and proceed to the area playoffs in the consolation bracket. Alva will take on Berryhill at 1:30 p.m. in Enid Thursday afternoon.

First Half

Morgan Heath put Alva on the scoreboard first with a couple of free throws, but Luther went on a 10-0 run. Hadlee Ohm finally broke through for an Alva basket. Luther added a trey to increase their lead to 13-4. Then Alva went on a seven point run with baskets from Jaycee Kelln and Ohm along with a trey from Carly Argo. At the end of the first quarter, Luther led by two at 13-11.

Harlee Jones started off the second quarter with five points for Luther, increasing their lead to seven. Baskets by Kylie Adair and Jaycee Kelln plus an Ohm free throw cut that lead to one. A deep three by Halyn Browning put Luther up 21-17, but baskets by Lakin Gaddy and Kelln tied the game at 21. Jones scored for Luther, but Kelln answered to tie again. A free throw by Browning gave Luther a one point lead going into halftime at 24-23.

Second Half

The third quarter was back and forth as the teams traded baskets. A trey by Addison Harris gave Luther a five point lead at 31-26. Ladybug Channing Ferguson hit a basket followed by two free throws from Gaddy and one from Heath to tie at 31. Browning hit a couple of free throws to give Luther a 33-31 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, the Ladybugs managed two baskets while Luther hit one. The remaining points were all made at the free throw line. Luther was 22 of 30 from the stripe for the game while Alva managed 17 of 28. In the end, Luther held onto their lead, winning 48-44.

Wrap-Up

The Ladybugs were led in scoring by Kelln with 13 followed by Gaddy with eight and Ohm with seven. Both Heath and Adair had five points while Argo had four and Ferguson two.

Browning led the Lady Lions with 18 points while Jones had 15. Maggie Vinson had six points, Darcy Roy five and Ashtynn Barnett four.
