Merrill honored at Alva City Council meeting

It doesn't occur every month, but when the City of Alva receives a report of an employee going above and beyond the usual scope of their duties, they reward that employee. Monday night during the Alva City Council meeting, Jacoby Merrill, transfer station operator, was recognized.

City administration received an email from former Alva resident Steve Neuman about "one of your exceptional employees." Neuman said he was in Alva cleaning out some property and made several trips to the landfill (transfer site) north of town.

"I was met by Jacoby Merrill when I first arrived. Jacoby was extremely helpful and conversational. I explained my situation, and he was articulate in explaining what was and wasn't allowed. Not knowing the regulations, I brought some items that weren't allowed at the landfill. Not knowing my options, he was helpful in sending me to the appropriate places to dispose of the trash I had. Upon my second arrival, he jumped in with a rake and helped me offload my trash. He did this every time I showed up, which was more than I anticipated. I greatly appreciated his help!" wrote Neuman.

"I recognize how someone in that position could easily stand by and watch someone do their work. Rather than waiting for me to leave and sweep up the mess I left, he willingly jumped in and offered his help several times. This speaks volumes to the customer service the city of Alva expects to deliver. Jacoby demonstrated exceptional work ethic while maintaining the integrity of the landfill. I appreciated his friendly, helpful attitude while standing in the middle of everyone's trash! He is to be commended for his work."

As a part of his recognition, Merrill received dinner for two at any restaurant in the city limits of Alva, two tickets to the Rialto Theatre, and eight hours of extra paid vacation.
