Once American women were allowed to participate in drag racing at its highest levels in the 1960s, several of them began to win races and accumulate points toward year-end championships.

The driver who did more to solidify the position of female drivers in this particular motorsport was Shirley Muldowney who, in time, became known by her fellow drivers as the “first lady of drag racing.”

Muldowney was born “Shirley Ann Roque” in Vermont in 1940 and was raised in Schenectady, New York. As a teenager, she enjoyed the “street racing” that was popular with her peers.
