When Shirley Muldowney began competing in the “Top Fuel” category of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in 1973, she faced discrimination from fans of the sport as well as some of her fellow male drivers.
She soon won over her numerous detractors, however, by winning races and showing that a woman could drive a race car as well as a man could. In fact, she proved to be a better driver than most of the men competing on the NHRA
circuit.
The NHRA conducts qualifying runs with the top 16 qualifiers being allowed to compete in an individual race. Two qualifiers then compete against each other...
