November 29, 2023

Kiowa (Kansas) City Administrator Sam Demel's resignation was on the agenda for the city council's special meeting last night.

Demel said he took the city manager position at Purcell, which has a population of 6,600 and a city staff of 120. Kiowa's population is approximately 900 with a staff of 12, he said.

Demel said he, his wife and eighth-grade son are leaving for several personal reasons. They will be closer to family at Purcell. The Demels have two older children.

His last day in Kiowa will be Dec. 28. Demel said he'll start his job at Purcell in January. He started as city administrator in Kiowa in December 2020.

A Nov. 22 article in the Purcell Register told of Demel's hiring. In that article, Purcell Mayor Graham Fishburn reported 25 people applied for the Purcell position. “He (Demel) was our top choice due to his (25 years) experience, education and his background. He provided the best fit for our city,” Fishburn continued.

Demel will be general manager for the Purcell Public Works Authority in addition to his title of city manager.
