Things weren't looking good for the Alva Goldbugs as they took on Frontier last Friday, Feb. 2, for homecoming. The Mustangs outscored Alva 16-7 in the first quarter and increased their lead to 36-21 at halftime. The slow start was attributed in part to a round of illness that hit the team. However, the determined Goldbugs came out of the break and scored 17 points to nine for the Mustangs in the third quarter. Frontier still held a 45-38 lead. Scoring 20 points in the final period, the Goldbugs gradually pulled out in front to hold a two-point lead with seconds remaining. Daylon Malone went to the free throw line, making both shots and securing a four-point lead. A wild Frontier shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim, and the Goldbugs won 58-54.

Senior Aiden Kimberlin led the Alva scoring with 17 points followed by Trace Hamilton with 10. Malone and Kash Shipley had nine points each. Lantz Mathers scored six points while Aiden Ruiz had five and Kelan Penco two.

Leading the Mustangs was Allen Jones with 14 points followed by Noah Buffalohead with 11. Christian Plumley had nine and Terence Hall eight. Avery Butler and Trey Shoten scored six points apiece.

Goldbugs Win at Woodward

The Goldbugs traveled to Woodward on Tuesday where they faced another tough battle. In the first quarter, the Boomers led by as much as 11 points. Woodward was up 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Goldbugs pulled out a slim 31-27 lead by halftime. A strong third quarter put Alva on top 53-39, and the final was Alva 71, Woodward 60. The win increased the Goldbug season record to 14-6.
