After John has told us who and what to love in Chapter 1 into Verse 11 of Chapter 2, he goes on to explain to us what not to love in verses 12 through 17. We aren't to chase after what the world offers, because, much like Christ illustrated with the woman at the well, the world won't satisfy. John then encouraged the young Christians to remain faithful in the midst of the false teachers who were making things hard for them.
